Empowerment to Enliven Your Body

To understand what Fascial Fitness® is let’s start with what myofascia is.

Myo = muscle “the red stuff”
Fascia = connective tissue “the white stuff”
Myofascia = the multi-layered white connective tissues running throughout your muscles

MYOFASCIA
Is the type of tissue that stabilizes and protects you. Myofascia is what “holds” your muscles together. Without myofascia, your muscles would have no shape. You’d be a pile of bones, muscles and skin – lying in a heap on the floor.

Red n’ White Stuff

EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED. There is a body-wide intricate web of interconnectivity within your myofascial system.  Your myofascia links your muscles with other connecting structures in very specific ways, throughout your entire body.

These very specific lines of “myofascial connectivity” profoundly affect your body on deep postural and structural levels. Imbalances in these lines often cause pain and dysfunction, because everything is connected! We are all wearing a “full-body myofascial suit”.

For images of all the myofascial lines in the body, scroll to bottom.

WHEN HEALTHY your myofascia is very flexible with healthy viscosity and it does not cause you any pain.

WHEN UNHEALTHY your myofascia tightens and can restrict the movement of your muscles and other tissues. This can cause pain and other health problems.

Healthy Myofascia – has glide & slide, it morphs with movement

Unhealthy Myofascia – can get bound down & cause pain

What Is FASCIAL FITNESS?

Fascial Fitness® is the registered name of the original source of myofascial oriented training. It was developed by a core team of internationally renowned sport scientists, movement experts and fascial therapists in collaboration with the fascia research group led by Dr. Robert Schleip at Ulm University, Germany.

The research-based Fascial Fitness® techniques work to optimize your myofascial system as it relates to movement. The targeted training methods of Fascial Fitness® for active myofascial mobilization are very different from simply working out or stretching.

Fascial Fitness® is learning how to develop strong, supple and resilient myofascial tissues. You learn self-care methods to unwind, rehydrate and nourish your myofascial system to make it healthy again.

THE MAIN ELEMENTS OF FASCIAL FITNESS

1. Myofascial Recovery (aka SMR – Self-Myofascial Release)

Learn a profoundly effective self-care method to help replenish the deep cellular level hydration that your myofascia once had. Experience using an assortment of small therapeutic balls on various areas of your body. Free myofascial restriction, re-educate muscles, increase circulation, promote healing, restore length and muscular balance, prevent injury, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation.

2. Power Stretching

In the myofascial world, it is considered “old-school” to hold stretches. Explore the most up-to-date scientific methods of myofascial stretching. In FASCIAL FITNESS we don’t just pull-on individual muscles. Instead, we use gentle oscillatory & micro-movements utilizing different lines of trajectory and vector loads. Learn to access body-wide “myofascial lines” and actively stretch the body more globally.

3. Elastic Recoil

Adults of every age should still be able to do a little jump if needed, or a hop over something … like you did when you were a kid! This concept aims to maintain or re-awaken your “sense of youthfulness”. Re-train your fascial system to rebuild and release the “elastic capacity of the stored energy” it holds. This will help you move more easily and quietly … more like a Ninja. We do this through dynamic movements like pre-loaded “springy little jumps” and “elastic arm & legs springs”. Learn sweeping full-body functional movements with light kettlebells.

4. Sensory Refinement

This is where we cultivate “kinesthetic awareness” – the sensing and feeling of where your body is in space. Myofascia is a highly intelligent and sensory body-wide organ. We develop refinement of movement and body awareness. We foster the expansion of elegance, grace, beauty and well-being in the body’s expression of movement. Your body’s self-perception improves with high level kinesthetic acuity techniques.

Thomas Myers - Myofascial Lines of The Body

There are eleven scientifically proven and widely accepted myofascial “lines of pull” that are deeply connecting your entire body. In the fascial world we don’t say we have over 650 individual muscles… we say that we have “1 muscle – divided into 650 “sausage links!”
